Excuse my shameless self-promotion but I was lucky enough to hit all the bestsellers’ lists within days of my newest book, “Who Owns Canada Now”, hitting the stores.
I’m now in deepest, darkest book-flog mode and am taking a respite today from my usual blogging to try and sell some books. Won’t do it again. Promise. This my ninth book, published by HarperCollins, and information is available through my website.
By the way, book publishing is not a path to riches unless you are a Clinton or make Oprah’s list. It is also not really a legitimate business anymore than wildcat drilling in the 19th Century was. It is pure foolishness because people like me are paid to design a “widget” or book by someone who mass produces it without a guaranteed market, then places it in stores on consignment. Only people who love words become enmeshed in such enterprises.

New Zealand Minister for Ethnic Affairs Chris Carter said on Thursday that New Zealand First party’s deputy leader Peter Brown’ comments on latest statistics on the Asian population in New Zealand are “a nonsense.”

Speaking from Vietnam, where he is leading an education mission to secure business for New Zealand education providers, Carter said it was disappointing that while so many New Zealanders embraced and enjoyed the many cultures and cultural events of different ethnic groups, Brown remained out of touch with multicultural New Zealand.

Canada disputes UN’s choice for Israeli monitor

The lead human rights body of the United Nations Wednesday picked a Jewish academic to monitor Israeli treatment of Palestinians - but Canada said he was the wrong man for the job.

An emeritus professor at Princeton University, Richard Falk has compared Israeli actions affecting Palestinians to the Nazi persecution of Europe’s Jews.

Canada used its seat on the 47-member UN Human Rights Council to question his commitment to “impartiality and objectivity” as the next Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories.

Australia boosts tsunami detection in Coral Sea

Australia said on Tuesday it had installed a deep ocean tsunami buoy in the Coral Sea off its northeastern coast, boosting tsunami detection in a region which has seen two tsunamis kill more than 2,000 people since 1998.

“The new buoy was deployed in the Coral Sea last week and is now operational,” Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett said in a statement.

“It is monitoring changes in sea levels for signs of potential threat from the South Solomon and New Hebrides trenches to the east coast of Australia,” Garrett said.
